North Chattanooga

North Chattanooga sits across the river from downtown: the North Shore along Frazier Avenue, and the neighborhoods up the hill behind it, like Hill City, Riverview, and Normal Park. We're here multiple times a week, at houses up the hill and at a handful of businesses on Frazier. The problems we see most here are smokybrown cockroaches and rodents, and like anywhere else, we start with an inspection.

What are North Chattanooga houses like?

It depends on which part. Hill City is an old neighborhood. Most of its houses went up before World War II, and they share a lot with the old houses in St. Elmo and Highland Park: brick foundations, crawlspaces, big trees, and a few rounds of remodeling. The lots are even smaller, the houses even closer together, and the streets are steep, with even less parking.

Riverview is a different world. It grew up around the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club, and it's the high-end part of North Chattanooga: big houses on big lots, some with views of the river. Even the older houses there have nearly all been remodeled to modern standards, and they're more likely to have a basement or a conditioned cellar than a crawlspace.

Here and there, newer houses fill in the older blocks, and they come with their own questions, like when they were last treated for termites.

Why so many smokybrown cockroaches?

They've become a much bigger deal around here over the last 20 years or so. Smokybrowns like to live up high, in gutters, attics, and under the eaves, and older hillside yards are full of other spots they love: retaining walls packed with leaves, ivy growing up the walls, and low decks that stay damp underneath. When the weather changes they come inside, and they often show up upstairs first.

We can't tear out a retaining wall or a deck, and we wouldn't want to. Instead, Regular Service treats those spots around the outside each season, which keeps the cockroaches outside, along with the ants, spiders, and wasps.

What about mice and rats?

We see a fair number of rodent problems in North Chattanooga, more than you might expect, and we suspect being close to the river is part of the reason. In the old houses, the crawlspace doors and brick foundations usually have a few gaps a mouse can use. Our usual approach is to clear out the ones already inside, then seal up the entry points so the next ones can't follow.

What about termites?

It depends on the house. A 100-year-old house was probably treated for termites five or six times over the years, and the older treatments lasted for decades in the soil, so there may still be some protection in the dirt around the foundation, unless someone has dug it up. There's no way to know for sure without a look.

A house built 20 or 30 years ago is different. Its original treatment has most likely worn off, so once a house passes about 20 years without a new one, we'd start thinking about termite bait stations. It's not urgent, but the wooden parts of a house are expensive.

What's the neighborhood like?

The North Shore is the busy part, with shops and restaurants along Frazier Avenue and Coolidge Park on the river. Up the hill it gets quieter. Riverview was its own town for a while, until Chattanooga annexed it in 1929, and Normal Park shares its name with the neighborhood school.

Neighbors in North Chattanooga say

“Dan and his team were so helpful and knowledgeable, used them for 6 months now. I have recently moved and eagerly await there initial visit. Scheduled online and they quickly called to see if they could come out sooner. Great customer service here.”

Morgan R., North Chattanooga · 2025

“Dan and Stephen are great! We've been with them for about 9/10 months. They are very knowledgeable in their craft, always on time, and courteous. They work with you if you have to reschedule. Whatever they use works! We haven't had any major pest issues or infestations. We see something in our home every blue moon (e.g., spider, earwig); and it's either dead or near death. Majority of the time it's dead. As long as my husband and I live in Chattanooga, Pest Tech will be our pest control guys!”

Afton J., Northshore · 2019

“Pest Tech services two different homes for me, each with very different needs. The guys are amazing. Really thorough assessments, great treatment and maintenance. They even follow up to make sure that everything has been resolved and no new issues have popped up. I couldn't be happier with the service and value that they provide.”
